The Bonda of Odisha
In the Eastern Ghats, mist-covered mountains, the sound of heavy silver neckbands clinking together can be heard amongst the dense canopies. Bonda women, whose heads are shaved and who are dressed in bright colors and lots of bead accessories, have a history that goes back further than modern-day society. When visiting a Bonda village, one can enter a time capsule of sorts, an ancient civilization that is undisturbed.
Quick Facts / Snapshot

- Famous For: Distinctive beaded jewelry, "Remo" identity, and weekly tribal markets (Haats).

History & Origin Story.
The Bonda tribe, who call themselves “Remo” (meaning ‘people’ in their native tongue), are considered one of the oldest and most primitive tribes in India. Anthropologists believe they are part of the first wave of human migration out of Africa, settling in the rugged highlands of Odisha nearly 60,000 years ago. Throughout history, they have remained fiercely independent, choosing to live in secluded hilltops to preserve their unique genetic and cultural identity from outside influence.
Spiritual Significance & Beliefs
For the Bonda, the forest is not just a home but a divine entity. Their spirituality centers on “Animism,” in which they worship a pantheon of spirits residing in trees, streams, and rocks.
Their primary deity is Patkhanda, symbolized by a double-edged sword kept in a sacred banyan tree. Every ritual performed by the Bonda is a gesture of gratitude toward nature, assuring that the delicate balance between the hills and the people remains unbroken.
Legends & Local Stories.
Local folklore tells a fascinating tale regarding their attire. Legend has it that while the Goddess Sita was bathing in a forest pond, she was spotted by some Bonda women. In her shame, she cursed them to shave their heads and wear only beads as clothing. While this is a mythological take, the Bondas wear their unique appearance with immense pride, viewing their beads as a protective shield and a symbol of their unique heritage.
How to Access & Best Time.
Reaching the Bonda Hills requires a bit of an adventurous spirit. The nearest central town is Jeypore, which is well-connected by rail and road from Visakhapatnam (the closest airport). From Jeypore, it’s a 3-hour drive to Malkangiri.
Best Time to Visit: The cooler months from October to February are ideal. To see the tribe in their most authentic social setting, visit on a Thursday for the Onkadelli Weekly Market, where they descend from the hills to trade.
The Village Experience.
A journey with us begins at the foothills of the Bonda Ghat. We start the day early to catch the morning mist as it clears over the thatched-roof huts. You will spend time observing the community’s social structure, where women hold a highly respected and dominant position. The afternoon is spent watching the locals craft daily tools or brew their traditional drinks. As the sun sets, the village elders often share stories through rhythmic chants, offering a rare glimpse into an oral history that has never been written down.
Local Culture, Food & Surroundings.
Life here is beautifully simple. The Bondas are expert foragers and farmers, practicing “Podu” (shifting cultivation) on the slopes. Their diet consists of millets, forest tubers, and the famous Salap (palm wine), which is a central part of their social gatherings. The surroundings are breathtakingly green, filled with wild waterfalls and narrow trails and that offers a raw, unpolished beauty rarely found in mainstream tourist destinations.
Unique Skills & Art Forms.
The most striking art form of the Bonda is their beadwork. Women weave their own “Ringas” (small waist cloths) on primitive back-strap looms using fibers from the Kerang tree. They also spend hours stringing thousands of colorful beads into elaborate necklaces and headgear. Additionally, Bonda men are legendary archers; their skill with the bow and arrow is not just for hunting but is a rite of passage that signifies bravery and adulthood within the tribe.
